Flyer for Chayei Sarah 2019

Every year, on Parshat Chayei Sarah, the Sabbath on which Jews read the Bible portion describing the death and burial of the Biblical Matriarch Sarah and Abraham’s purchase of the Cave of Machpela and the field surrounding it in Hebron. Every year, upwards of 50,000 Jews flock to Hebron on this special Sabbath.

Parshat Chayei Sarah is one of the busiest days of the year in Hebron as the city opens its arms to receive tens of thousands of visitors from Israel and abroad. There is often not enough sleeping accommodations for all the pilgrims, so groups happily set up tents on the grass and open areas surrounding the Cave of the Patriarchs and in the neighboring suburb of Kiryat Arba.

Jews young and old make it an annual tradition to visit Hebron during Parshat Chayei Sarah to honor the life and legacy of the matriarch of the Children of Israel and Abraham’s first acquisition in the land promised to him and his descendants by God.
